I used to have a black and white crosshair that was visible on about every surface I ran acrossed till it did the black and purple checker box.

sv_pure doesn't check the replay thumbnails folder, and script edits can be used to change the default crosshair files to load from there, allowing fully custom vtf crosshairs

also, some hud crosshairs are fonts that replace text characters with a crosshair-shaped vector, which is then drawn as a custom text element
