[Help] Where is "TF2.exe"

I know in steamapps/common/Team Fortress 2/ that there is a hl2.exe but when I run that I get an error message.

Yea almost every or every valve game that came out after hl2 uses hl2.exe as an executable name.

its the hl2.exe because that was the base of the source engine so most valve games that came after it used the same exe and just coded around it

hl2.exe is the executable for all the Source engine games. I think you can launch it fine as long as Steam is running at the same time.

If you want it as a desktop shortcut, in the Steam Library, go to Team Fortess 2, click on the settings icon (gear), manage and click on add desktop shortcut.

since this is already necroed i'll just jut in and say you actually CAN start tf2 without steam

open command prompt, and navigate to your tf2 folder by doing the command
cd "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Team Fortress 2"

then just enter the command
hl2.exe -game tf

note that starting it this way will start the game in insecure mode, even if you put the -secure launch option
so it won't let you join VAC-secured servers (you won't be banned it'll just refuse to let you join)

You find the file on desktop if you downloaded it with the shortcut, or find it in the windows menu if you are on windows.
