How do viewmodels affect fps?
i saw a video from 3kilksphilip about this topic, it was for cs go. i want to know if it's a viable video for tf2 aswell, as they are built on the same engine (the source engine).
also what would this mean for a toaster?
i'll do some benchmarks of my own tomorrow and post the results here.

If you mean FOV then i think it does affect.

Less FOV a bit more FPS.

Not 100% sure tho.

Nah, i am talking about viewmodels. They can be enabled/disabled using r_drawviewmodel 1 or 0 (1=enabled; 0= disabled)

not using weapon viewmodels will often give you a slight fps boost
in general it's nothing huge, so use the viewmodel settings you find more confortable and cut something else for fps, like shadows, eyes, explosion particles stuff like that
Yeah i already did all of that. And as long as the dif between viewmodel on or off are not noticible, i will be using viewmodels off

I will still do some benchmarks of my own. My main concern was that it was gonna affect my fps in a negative way.

Viewmodel FoV has no effects on performance. When you increase it into ridiculous levels, your computer still has to calculate and render all of the polugons, but they just are so tiny they won't be seen.
Overall FoV that increases how far on the sides you can see, can have slight impact on performance, as it means slightly bit more assets to be loaded at once before it goes out of your screen.

If you are somehow able to disable the viewmodel instead of just moving it or increasing the fov, might have unsignificantly small fps boost as the viewmodels in tf2 are as rudimental as you can get. People tend to disable them only for increased visibility. - Personally I love to see the viewmodels the way they were intended.

so this applies to transparent viewmodels?

For me the higher the viewmodel fov you have it take alot more of fps ive tried it im having 80 fps in a 87 fov but when i decreased it to 57 im having around 160 which is very weird for me
