TASTE THE RAINBOW...
Actually it may be helpful to try the tutorial, followed by requesting a coach(both are available from the main menu). I keep hearing how broken it is but it worked for me back in the day.
The issue is quickly identifying your situation and your way out of it, by knowing the capabilities of each class and their weapons. Study the TF2 wiki for all the nerdly details. https://wiki.teamfortress.com/wiki/Main_Page
Watch some pro-level players of each class, you'll soon learn their capabilities, but more importantly you'll hopefully learn (or be lucky enough to invent) the best counterattack(s) to each situation.
Good luck, happy hunting, and have fun!
The only notable disadvantage that actually exists would probably be that obtaining new weapons can be a slight grind and a majority of the good melee weapons aren't even achievement items.
you see, the answer to your dilemma is quite simple:
don't play tf2
But the sale isn't making you play this game. For one thing, you could just play CSGO or any of the other participating games instead. Secondly, playing TF2, even if your very good at the game, is not the optimal way to earn points. If you have any game with achievements open for at least 30 minutes during the sale, you can claim any unlocked achievements for points. My computer froze by the time I was half way done opening everything, and I could still claim points on my laptop. Thirdly, earning points is pointless. If you spend them, you help your team and earn tokens. Helping your team is pointless. No matter what you do Corgi is going to win. The only reason Corgi hasn't won on certain days is because Valve is interfering with the race. If you want tokens, points spent doesn't matter, only max points does:
To me, the above quote indicates that any unclaimed points (that is, max points - spent points) will be converted into tokens on July 7 @ 10 am PDT. You do gain one thing from participating in the race. For everyday that you participate, your max points goes up by 100. To participate you only need to spend 1 point. You can surely get at least 1 point easily and enjoyably from playing something other than TF2.
You are right about matchmaking not doing its job though.
Get a config set up and update your default settings, you'd be amazed how much better this alone will make you play. Also, play MGE. It'll really help you with your aim and deathmatching skills, and it can also be an excellent place for more experienced players to give you one-on-one advice.
Lastly, play on jump maps. You won't regret it.
me and a TON of others had no issues fitting in so your claims are also partially incorrect
