Who in their right mind thinks that pyro is anything besides a man
The pyro isn't solely limited to being male.
Except that's the entire point of the pyro. If you don't know that the pyro can be whatever you want them to be, you don't actually understand the character of the pyro.
In all likelyhood, Pyro is male like every other class.
Again, pretty sure Valve has the canonical gender stashed away somewhere.
Look at his bio it says HE

Considering all of the effort Valve directed towards establishing TF2's story and theme, it's not dumb at all. They likely did intend for the pyro to be male at the start due to that one concept art, but then they realized how the pyro would be a more effective character if the player can choose. There isn't a canonical gender anymore.
