He is easy and simple to play, and can pull off some cool tricks that are very satisfying to watch. I think that is a lot of the appeal.
Probably angered a lot of people by saying that but that is how I feel about soldier.
You cannot judge is class OP or not by current Pub gameplay.
Then again learning this stuff requires map knowledge and generally good game skill and sense.
Where did I say Soldier was OP, and where did I mention Pub gameplay?
I'm pretty sure the majority of players don't oftenly play private competitive servers, they play on Valve competitive and casual, or they play community servers.
These days pretty much only way to judge Class' balance is by competitive because it has actual teamwork and competent players.
Again most people probably play on pubs, and competitive is a completely different story. Every class plays differently in that environment.
Now if most Soldier mains weren't jackass-of-all-trades, then this game would be a better place.
1.) Rocket Jumping / bombing enemies consistently
2.) Non-arced projectiles that go boom
3.) Variety of weapons and secondaries to choose from
4.) He is the closest you can get to get a Quake-like feeling - the Original only improves that
5.) Advancing on point #1, high mobility classes are just inherently more fun
