Custom hitsound doesn't work. Why?
I screamed into my own mic and recorded it.
Created a .wav of it.

I went to my tf2 folders. And created a few more as I was being told.
tf>custom>customhitsound>sound>ui
and that's where I placed my hitsound.

I went to a non-valve server. Put my hitsound on default and it didn't work.
I watched a couple of tutorials which did the same thing as I did.

Can anyone see my error?

OK, so I found the document, and there are a few things you need to check. What @we are we are walmart (editing this post: they changed their name to @gene.png now) said about the frequency is correct. I'm going to copy and paste this line of text from my document:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"IF HITSOUNDS AREN'T WORKING, THEN MOST LIKELY HE FREQUENCY IS NOT CORRECT.
OPEN THE FILE IN AN AUDIO EDITING PROGRAM, AND THEN SAVE THE FILE WITH THE EXTENSION .WAV, WITH THE FREQUENCY AT 44100 hz AND 16 BIT AND STEREO."
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So I know how to do this in my audio editing program, but I'm not sure how to do it on other ones, and you may not have the same audio editing program that I have. In mine, which is wavepad by NCH software, you need to export the file as an audio file, and then it will bring up a dialogue box which will allow you to change the frequency and "16 bit and stereo." If, after trying this, it still doesn't work, there are some things to double check just in case, such as making sure the file is called "hitsound.wav" (no capital letters, no spelling erros, .wav format, etc.) And if it STILL doesn't work, the only other thing I can think that would be wrong is the directory. The directory I've always used that has worked for me is this:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
C: > Program Files (x86) > Steam > steamapps > common > Team Fortress 2 > tf > custom > my_custom_stuff > sound > ui
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ALSO another thing to note is that when you use a hitsound, it creates a file (I can't remember the extension,) that is I think in the sound folder? The one just before the ui folder. You'll need to delete that to refresh hitsounds and stuff.

TLDR; Make sure everything is correct, the audio file is .wav, and the audio file's frequency is 44100hz and 16 bit and stereo.

I think I had that problem a while back as well. I can't remember how to fix it, but I wrote up a document for myself on a step-by-step process of how to make a hitsound work. I'm not sure where it is on my computer; I'll do some looking around and if I find it I will copy and paste the steps into this thread.

Anyway, that's what the problem with my hitsounds has always been. If you can't figure out how to change this info in your audio editing program, I highly suggest getting wavepad by NCH software. There is a free version, and it's good to use for this type of stuff. Good luck. I hope it works for you.

Dude, I have been looking for a way to solve my problem for years, I just so happened to come across this, and is worked perfectly for me, thank you SO much for the information, I would have never known or thought to change the HZ.

Eyy nice. 3 years later but sure haha.
where do i change the bit on wavepad lol

If I may pop in, the free Audacity program might be easier to use, it has a lot of pull-down menus and states the frequency/etc all one the one screen.

44Khz, 16bit Stereo is "uncompressed" btw - in case anyone wants to use the phrase/term.
(getting real technical, it is 'very lightly compressed' (little endian), but if you look up WAV files and "uncompressed" what you'll get it 44KHz 16bit stereo files)
