How do you unlock different outfits/weapon skins?

Hey guys, I'm new to this game (and steam in general), and I was wondering how you unlock different outfits/weapon skins? Do you have to pay for them or is there some sort of unlockable way? Thanks!

weapon skins were in gun mettle update which is gone but you can buy them on steam market which is best or trade for them

You get different weapons from drops mostly, or you can trade. Cosmetics can be traded for or bought

You can pay to become premium on the Mann Co. Store, and then you can trade for hats and cosmetics as well as skins.

I cant believe in this digital age, someone has never heard of tf2 this late in its career history. Even if they never sat down and did it, the title is so mainstream folks are tired from hearing about it.

you can get new outfits either by doing a really good job killing so many people and at a random chance, you will get a new cosmetic OR you can just buy some from the shop
and you can only get weapon skins either by buying them from the community market or waiting until halloween and christmas since those are also the 2 times of when the game gives every player a brand new halloween and christmas cosmetic cases of where you have to buy the keys that they need in order for you to unlock them

1st. You have to get premium
2nd. There is a rare chance of getting cosmetics from random drops. It's rare but i actually got 2 cosmetics back to back some tome ago :D
3rd. Buy a key, trade them into ref. There are many good looking loadouts which cost like pennys if you were to rever them back into real money.
