Has anyone else noticed how Blizzard wants you to think TF2 is dead in comparison to their game?
I know i'll get hate for "Yet another OW-TF2 comparison, but I honestly don't give a ♥♥♥♥. I felt this was a hugely notable talking point, so im bringing it up.

Google "TF2 player count" The first thing you'll see are steamcharts numbers, which will say how many people are playing at this moment. Usually around 50000 and 70000 at peak times. It's not the numbers, say, CSGO, the most popular competitive shooter of all time, which has around 8 times as much, but they're decent considering we've gotten almost no new real content since MYM, and a sizeable chunk of people disliked that.

Now google "Overwatch player count" First thing you'll see are articles claiming Overwatch's massive sales numbers, not player count mind you, sales numbers. Gaming journalism site after gaming journalism site claiming "20 MILLION SALES, 25 MILLION, THIS IS GETTING RIDICULOUS" Article after article praising this unstoppable juggernaut. So we quickly see the juxtaposition. TF2 has 50000ish numbers while OW has 25000000ish numbers. Even though anyone with a brain knows the difference between "Players in game in the span of an hour" and "People who have purchased the game"

So I looked deeper into this. Why doesn't Blizzard release a player count? They clearly want this to be the juxtaposition most readily available, they do the same with LoL so DOTA looks smaller in comparison, and it's easy to see why. They want their competetors to look dead. If their games look like they dwarf them in comparison, people who rely on TF2 will leave. After all, youtubers and competitive players can't stay alive if their game is "dead" Right? And this just keeps the cycle going. Once all the faces of the community leave, the community goes too, not all of it of course, but enough to make the player count drop.

Of course, the Overwatch player count is definitely higher than TF2's, but not to the degree they wish you to believe. But that's not all, once they start to see people getting bored and leaving their game, they just drop another character, maybe an animated short to corral them all back like the sheep they are.

TLDR: Blizzard, by carefully guarding the player count of their games strategically makes their competition look dead in comparison, thus causing those who make a living off said competition switch over to their games.

TF2 playercounts are actually closer to 30k or less at any given time, ones who are actually in servers.

I do get your point however, its just that Overwatch is currently overshadowing many games, so it makes sense that they have more sales.

Because TF2 is irrelevant to Overwatch's playerbase size. The size difference is so massive there's no reason to view TF2 as a financial competitor.

Adding to the fact it's brand new compared to TF2's old age, the growth of new players is substantially larger in Overwatch thanks to TF2's non-existant marketing. And why would Valve continue to advertise a 9 year old game?

Blizzard doesn't need to release player counts when the game's very stable as it is.

That doesn't count community servers across the world though, or people who left the game on.

Either way it's a bad way to measure the size of the player pool, as is just throwing out the number of people who bought the game, if that were the case, the "TF2 player count" Would be 39 million.

A good estimate of the "Active playerbase" Is the total number of unique players in the last two weeks, in TF2's case, roughly 1.8 million. Another metric Blizzard doesn't release

Trading bots account for a decent chunk of it. Assume that a static 10K-15K are on at all times farming wep drops. This has an impact on the hourly count, but barely any on the total number of unique players in the last two weeks

1) It does count worldwide players in both valve and community servers.

2) Bots and idlers with the game left open do not count as "players", in my book.

if ow would have many players its Q times on low Levels ( im lvl 11 ) wouldnt be way over 20 seconds for bots and over 1-3 Minutes for Quickplay)
even Aram , the least played LoL mode has faster Q times in Europe , no matter what time

Bots certainly not I agree. But if I open the game with the intention of playing it and leave it idle, I at least plan to play it.

But you're not in a server, so, no.

That's because casual and comp (to a FAR greater extent) have queue systems. Also what are you getting on with "low levels" Casual doesn't give that much of a ♥♥♥♥.
