Team Fortress 2
Max FPS = 300?
I cannot reach more than 299 fps I've noticed recently.
If I'd go from the lowest settings possible in game and then to highest, the fps will still remain the same.
changing the dx lvl changes nothing aswell.
But it's only 300 fps while playing on "Itemtest", whenever I join an official server my fps only reaches about 65, and it doesn't change whatever I do.

My computer has no problem handling Battlefield 1 below ultra settings with more than 100 fps, so I'm pretty sure it's the game and not my computers specs.

I'm trying to get the game to be more responsive to my mouse movement.
Thank you in forehand.

Only 65 FPS? Oh no! That's terrible! I can't imagine what it's like to have such high FPS! My consolations to you and your family, OP.

Try "fps_max 500".

It might just be obvious to me, but you're always going to have higher frames on an empty tiny enclosed map, and lower frames on an open map full of other people playing.

60 fps is very low in comparison to, let's say 500fps. The defenition is based on the context/what my computer specs are capable of.

The "fps_max ***" was set to 300, thank you for your answer.
May the old gods of TF2 bless you with an unusual in your next uncrate, or maybe not.

Type in your autoexec.cfg:

fps_max "0"

This will disable the max fps for tf2. But i dont recommendly this. I recommendly you to do this:

Get your refresh rate and calculate x2.
Example: 60x2 = 120
And calculate +1
120+1 = 121
Then, type fps_max "121"

=)

It's hard to compare fps changes when different things are happening all the time, for instance if you're playing online.

It was more of a sidenote that might not have an actual answer, but it creates alot of room for discussion. someone might know the cause and reason why my computer is underperforming in this specifik game in that specifik task, but probably not.

The question was why the fps won't change when I change the in-game settings, the "fps_max" explained why it won't go over 300, but doesn't explain the other question.
It'll remain a mystery then.
Thank you for your engagement.

boi i'd be happy if I got 50 in a mid-game spike

Turns out my absolute maximum fps in TF2 are about 750, it hurts my eyes to look at the graphics but it works, thanks.

The game was built in 2007, using an even slightly older version of Source, and has had tons of content piled on which broke optimization. Most of the original devs have abandoned the project for less dead-end work, leaving newer devs and possibly The Interns™ struggling to fix a mess they were left with.

I've never been able to set my fps_max either. I can change it, but mine will also always revert back to 300 after a few rounds. I just gave up trying to tinker with it completely.

I used to be like that too, but I saved up money for about 4 years in order to buy my gear, hard earned money. I remember the pain, I wish I could give you some of my fps XD.
But it's not the actual fps itself of which I'm after, I'm trying to get the perfect response time for my aiming.

try fps_max [number] into autoexec.cfg

You'll want as high of a frame-cap as possible with TF2 anyways, since the entire game's latency is dependent on frame rate. That's a quirky consequence of the outdated engine, apparently.

It works fine for me? Maybe if I'd set it in the launch options I won't have to write the command everytime I launch the game. Only one way to find out...

I had one in there, but sometimes the game wouldn't even start with it capped. I ended up removing it since my computer can handle high frame rates anyways /shrug
