My friends and I all have F2P accounts and we can't add each other as steam friends. How can we play together?

As far as I know you can't join someone's casual game, but you can join them if they're on a community server. I don't want my friends, all new players to TF2, and I to be dominated by pubstompers. We prefer to play casual, a more noob-friendly mode.

They're playing Casual mode though, ad-hoc (direct I think) connections aren't allowed since MyM on Valve servers

That's exactly the problem here, you need a Premium Steam account to add friends on Steam; and since OP isn't premium nor is his/her friends, they can't make a lobby
