It's been a while since I've read this visual novel but I'll try to help answer your questions
I'd say it's got a pretty dark/serious tone with plenty of bad ends but the good/true ends were satisfying to me. I don't remember any innapropriate/unfunny humor. Also start with Root A.
Hmm I can't remember any tropey characters this isn't really a "fanservice" type novel...
Never played Never7/Ever17 but there is romance.
If you *really* want it I have a free key to give away but you will need to add me. I hope it helps!
Three of the characters (four if you count a side character) are definitely inspired by anime tropes, but not to a huge extent. They're by no means pure stereotypes. The rest of them are fairly unique, IMO.
There is some romance, but it's less of a focus than in Never7 or Ever17. It exists mainly to flesh out some of the characters a bit. Since it's largely unrelated to the main events, nearly all of it happens in optional scenes. It also doesn't follow the traditional "pick a girl" formula of most VNs, including Never7 and Ever17, though going into any further detail would be a spoiler.
Incidentally, I wouldn't go into this VN expecting something like the Zero Escape series. Plot twists are much less of a focus here, and the story isn't really all that filled with suspense past Root A. Its primary focus lies in exploring a huge web of intersecting character arcs.
That's the only thing that bothers me about this Sekai bundle.
Root Double? Great game! No hamfisted fanservice, well-written, suspenseful, and the little bit of romance present isn't the central focus of the story. Same goes to Fault:Milestone, which is more of a medieval fantasy type, and while not as in-depth as Root Double (yet - Fault is episodic, whereas Root Double is a full 30+ hour read), it's also a good little VN.
And these two little gems are buried in a Bundle that is covered in smut, as if they were all the same genre somehow! Everything else is dating sims and cat girl fanservice - wish fullfillment, essentially.
Grah.
If you were looking to get Root Double, the Bundle is cheaper than buying the game alone, but almost everything else in there is a wash.
