If you have many "items" that you added to the model (like guns, sword, glasses, necklace, etc), it can add up pretty quickly. If the model also have like many differents expression or clothing that get toggle by doing gestures, it will add up a lot too.

Where are you seeing this count, on the SDK upload panel, or the inspector panel for the item you are trying to upload. If you are seeing it on the SDK upload panel and it isn't allowing you to upload because of this, you possibly have the import settings for your model incorrect. If this is something you are seeing on the inspector for your model, we will need more information on what it is you have, where you got it, if you have edited it in another program before importing.

It's saying this on the SDK control panel, can still upload it, but crashes when trying to optimise the model. No clue what to do, all I added to the character was some shoes.

You sure it's not the 2 billion 32 bit integer at 2,147,483,647?
If it is that number then you have mesh read / write disabled on one of your meshes in Unity.

If that is so, how would one enable it / Fix the problem?

In your model import settings. Similar area to where you change the model's rig to Humanoid, except this time you're going to the "Model" tab instead of the "Rig" tab.

In there under "Meshes" there's a checkbox called "Read / Write Enabled" ensure this is checked on for all meshes on your model.

Yea ok, it was disabled and i'll see if that changes anything. Are there any other options I should have checked?

However, whenever I attempt to upload the avatar, unity crashes. It does say i'm not using the recommended version so i'm updating it now but we'll see what happens.

Ensure you're using Unity 2018.4.20f1. Not just any random updated version of Unity.

Is there a specific version of VRCSDK I should be using?

The latest version of the SDK type you're using is ideal but older ones can work fine.

Hey I know i'm a bit late! I just started making avatars and I had the same issue. I believe your problem was that you added the VRC Descriptor to the wrong selection. For example, In unity you can select the entire avatar giving it a blue outline, or you can select the body asset giving it an orange outline. Make sure you select the Avatar itself (blue outline)
