If you want to log into the website you will need to create a VRC account and link it to your steam account

i got it.. in vr chat - settings i click on upgrade account then i get a generated word/phrase that i have to copy into the newly created account on the vrchat website. then my "guest steam" account migrates everything over to the vrchat account and i can change my name
