In most VR games they use a full stereoscopic image to provide the proper depth for each of your eyes, this also requires the image to be calculated twice for each eye as opposed to once in Desktop mode. Which doubles the computational load.
I'd advise running the SteamVR performance test to give you an idea of how your system fairs with VR.
