Otherwise, for gestures, its best to do gestures on the hand that isn't used for "driving" since touching the trackpad will often cause the gesture to reset or turn off.
But yeah, the vive wand trackpad is a bad design flaw since it's hella unreliable and easy to break. RE VRC gestures, it takes a little practice but I'm sure you'll get the hang of it.
You quickly get used to walking around with your grips pressed in while moving around in a sound/animation avatar.
Of course, that's provided your "open hand" gesture doesn't have a sound file on it too.
