I had a similar issue when I first started using SteamVR, because what SteamVR tries to do is swap your audio devices around when you launch a game.
I would try to specify what you're using, rather than leaving anything as default, as that was my issue originally.
I don't know if this will help you, but these are my current settings:
In Windows 10:
Default device/communications device - Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio)
Default microphone - Microphone (Realtek High Definition Audio)
In SteamVR:
Set Playback device to: Headphones (Rift Audio)
Set Record device to: Microphone (Rift Audio)
Mirror audio to device: Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio)
When SteamVR is exited
Set Playback device to: Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio)
Set Record device to: Microphone (Realtek High Definition Audio)
As a test i disabled all other audio devices except for the rift ones now, and i still have the same issue that audio is gone once i select the rift microphone ingame (VRChat - System - Microphone)
And within Oculus i have the Rift Headset/Microphone as VR Devices and Audio Mirroring disabled. But since it only happens when i change the Mic within the game, which should have no effect on the audio output device, i think this is a issue with the game? It could also be that some other software on my computer is causing trouble idk
But the weird thing is that Rift Audio Output works fine as long as i don't select the rift microphone ingame.
Maybe someone had a simelar issue before?
Note: This is only happening to me when I play VRChat. But then again, I don't have use my Rift audio & mic in other VR games in Steam; VRChat is the only game I have for Steam VR where I use both my Rift audio & the mic. I have also completly unplugged any other mics & audio such as my speakers & my HyperX Cloud II headset, stil no luck. Considering VRChat is in the Early Access stage, I'm leaning more on believing it has something to do with VRChat.
For so long I thought this was an issue with VRChat. I knew my Oculus was fine because it worked normally on my boyfriend's computer. I trouble-shooter the hell out of this. I followed all steps listed previously in other posts. But nothing would work. Many VRchat updates came out but still, nothing worked.
I recently upgraded everything in my computer. The only things I didn't replace were peripherals, storage bays, & my graphics card. After replacing everything else, my headset started working normally with VRchat. I'm almost certain it had something to do with my motherboard being so old. I did extensive research & everything pointed to my old motherboard. If your motherboard is 5-6+ years old, the issue might be your motherboard. But keep in mind all of the other things that I had done that might have fixed it. I upgraded to a new processor with a brand new version of Windows installed on it. & because I had a new processor, i had to reinstall my oculus & steam software.
That narrows it down to a few things:
- Windows
- Motherboard
- Steam
So that means you could try reinstalling Steam, re-formatting your computer, or get a new motherboard & hope that your money spent was worth it. My computer needed the upgrades. I did not do all this just to get my VRchat working. But I'm glad it worked.
Souls, how old is your motherboard?
