Custom avatar image?
I've seen some avatars with unique art in their listings (as opposed to just the model in a T-Pose). Anyone know how that's done?

you'd need to put a plane or cube into the scene, then add a texture to the cube (by adding it to the shader) then either putting the camera on it specifically, or use the model itself to show it off.

at least I think that's how it's done.

The camera can actually be moved to anywhere in the scene. I usually have a duplicate of my avatar posed somewhere else in my scene. Some people put textures on a Quad for a 2D image. Quads are better than Planes for this purpose.

^ Thank you, I'm an idiot when it comes to unity. I don't know what to use where.

So, question, adding the Quad to the scene won't make it follow me around, yes?

No, the quad won't follow you around. Just put it in the scene, not inside your actual model.

The SDK only uploads whatever you have on your actual model, the one where you add the VRC_Avatar Descriptor component. Everything else is fair game.
