Cannot connect with my VPN anymore
So I've been playing VRC for a few weeks now and I remember that I was able to just connect to the game whenever I wanted, with my VPN enabled since it usually is always running.
Now when I try to connect with my VPN enabled the connection will just time out and it'll stop working. I really need to get this fixed since I don't really enjoy being DDOS'd by random people in public lobbies.

FYI im using a legally acquired version of Express VPN.

Solution:
Change your VPN protocol from Automatic/Lightway to OpenVPN - UDP.

having the same problem over here... also using express...
same issue you're describing here. got an idea when it happened the first time? tried it yesterday for the first time in a while and it wouldn't let me get past logging in. just VOID and then timeout. asking because it's either express or a new vrc update.
a mate who uses "ExpressVPN v10.0.9 (2)_release" doesn't have that issue. I'll try to rollback my version and test it, then I'll get back to you

It was definitely a VRC update, because that updates much more frequently. I would have remembered if I had updated Express.

so i rolled back, tried it again. issue persists.
wild guess but are you trying to connect from germany by any chance? we know they ♥♥♥♥ up the internet every now and then with obscure laws.
the reason i got the VPN in the first place was certain movie worlds not properly loading anymore (servers either blocked by my ISP or germany itself) and now it's completely useless ^^'

I do yes try to connect from germany, but it doesn't work even when I use another server location.

there we have the culprit.
steam is alot smarter about locations and can't be easily fooled with a VPN.
idk why it would conflict but if you got VRC and steam linked i guess it's just telling you "NO". idk WHY it would do that, but that's the only connection of our common problem as express can be ruled out after my mate testing it and not having the issue
Shin Mar 16, 2021 @ 9:40am
I don't think that is the case, or maybe not the whole problem, since I just tested another VPN and it worked without issue. It only seems to occur when using Express for me.
Lizara Mar 16, 2021 @ 9:45am
guess it's time for me to change to another VPN then.. until that one gets blocked too xD
I'm still convinced it's linked to the newest changes to german steam due to laws
which one did you test?

A ♥♥♥♥♥♥ free one lol just for testing purposes. I still have like 8 months left of my Express subscription so I'm not gonna change to another one, just gonna see if I can find a workaround for the problem.

well... keep me posted in case you find a work-around. I'm also not fond of switching as express is affordable and easy to use.
it's just weird that this is the first post about this. if it was affecting more people you'd think there'd be more posts about it in here. i know alot of people who use VPN's for public rooms

Do try to set up VPN services that you're using on the router instead of using the typical software base openvpn client. This way when you're connecting to this router other device such as PC, console, mobile phone, etc will properly be route all the traffic which will have a less chance that other windows or other program could mess up with the routing list or somehow some services/program still can access your current physical location. (Blacklist processes, etc)

Note : only if your router is supported. If not, do consider purchase a commercial grade router or better.
Note2 : Better to have two router, one for local, another for VPN.

my router has a VPN function, but the thing is i use the VPN to be able to watch movies and series in certain worlds where the servers are blocked or impaired by germany. so using my router's VPN won't do ♥♥♥♥ for me + i paid good money for my VPN and i won't trash it just because VRC/steam/germany decides to be an ass about it

ExpressVPN is a high profile services. But because of "being" a high profile and well-known. It is usually being plague with constantly being target to be block first from many censorship. 2weeks work, a few day dead, and this playing catch will keep going on forever.
Your best bet is to try using a low profile services but high standard comparable or greater than ExpressVPN that is less likely to be block.

But all in all, if say, block thingy decided from user filling billing address info or credit card issuer, the bank. where it will tell physical info which country you're from (ie: Google store method) and you registered with it.
Just because of your filling info/setting it has been decided where your app client will be connected through which region server. With this then, none of the VPN method would help you get bypass it. This is just an example of how it work in common. If you want to roam freely and bypass strictly country. Be sure to eliminate all of the evident which is on user end.

Found a fix. It's the new ExpressVPN protocol thats causing the issue with VRC.
Open the ExpressVPN app, click on the top left corner, go to Options -> Protocol and select OpenVPN UDP. As far as I know it's as safe as Lightway and the usual VPN method. I also get a good 500 MBps speed with it so that shouldnt be an issue.

they changed alot of stuff with how protocols were handled etc so as shin said before it worked for a while changing from lightway to OpenVPN UDP. don't know if it still does.
