It makes sense quest can't see PC content, but no reason PC should be unable to see quest content.
Anyone else find this weird? I can view "mobile" content in unity no problem. It's just standard shader, the data is packed differently but it's not alien.

A lot of the issue there is that mobile versions of VRChat render using OpenGL while the Windows version uses Directx 11. After the shaders are compiled for their renderer and uploaded there isn't really any way to make them render properly as is in another rederer. They're essentially locked to the renderer they're compiled for.

There are theoretical solutions where you could take the textures and properties of the mobile OpenGL version of the shader, and plug them into a pre-compiled DirectX 11 version of the shader for the PC's renderer, but that's not something we're currently exploring as it's a very limited use case.

Oh wow, thank you, an excellent reply. If this was the discord I would have got nothing but babble.

I stress the importance of re-branding the "quest" content as "mobile" and having it become the global min spec and global common content for ALL platforms.

Think of the social benefit, and the performance benefit, and the resources saved, almost everyone would "quest". There's a huge schism right now.

Also if mobile auto-hides distant avatars by default when the FPS drops, you can raise the bar, it's slightly too low for a typical avatar, that's where much resentment comes from.
You only need 2 shaders, toon, and a slightly enhanced standard, to meet the needs of virtually everyone.

PS; A Warning: The CSAM hammer is coming, it'll cost you millions in financial damages. NSFW needs a hard lock so it's impossible to load on ALL instances minors can access, so basically only invite/invite+ is NSFW safe. You won't be allowed on Apple before fixing this, if you go on Apple before doing this, you're doomed.

There's likely nothing to fix.

Apple VRC will very likely have it's own separate version that doesn't interact with windows at all/android at all and they exist in their own separate space. Realistically there's not much wiggle room for the devs here.

If they actually want to make it crossplay with Mac and block NSFW content completely, playerbase will drop significantly. Look no further than imgur and tumblr for what happens when you decide to make NSFW content fully blocked. The userbase just vanishes.

Apple version of VRC will either be it's own space separate from others or we need a filter to designate worlds as 18+.

Making them invite/invite+ won't work either because that's essentially the same as just blocking it completely. Those players that might have NSFW avatars(even if they don't use it for NSFW reasons), won't even be able to meet each other anywhere. It won't result in anything other than disaster and a playerbase drop, not to mention playerbase segregation.

Also, another fun fact: The majority of people I know that use NSFW avatars, don't actually do any NSFW activities, they do support said things, but they use them simply because NSFW avatars are just of higher quality on average than anything else you can find.

You're overestimating how many people are in nsfw avatars casually, even when around furries I don't personally know any who don't have a SFW avatar. The ones who don't are creeps children should not be allowed to see anyways, maybe I and most others don't want to see those people either.
Typically NSFW on apple is unlocked on desktop, it just can't be on by default.
NSFW does NOT have to be killed globally, it just needs a toggle + not allowed in public.

You can achieve the same thing by making it a toggle in the account of the user rather than the world.

So people can choose if to enable it or not.

If it's not enabled, avatars marked NSFW don't load at all for that person, if it's enabled, then they load.

It's as simple as that, there's no need to over-engineer this like people tend to.

Besides, you really don't see NSFW content in public anyway.
