New to VRchat. Few questions. Any general tips?
Just decided to give it a go today (non VR mode). Before playing, I went into my settings, and enabled seeing everything, since I am the sort of person who wants to see the full depravity of humanity in his social game experience.

First place I went to after my home was that 2023 server which had a few people in it. I immediately came across 2 massive, MASSIVE player models basically covering up the entire middle area, and I got to thinking it'd be really cool if I could disable models of an excessive size like that.

Figured I could ask here if there's a way to do that, and I suppose for any additional general tips of things I should know to have an easier time. You know, things you wish you knew earlier. I'm just barely getting my footings in. I figured out that I could get a non-default avatar by joining a server and selecting one. That also got kind of annoying as the menu UI navigation seems a bit iffy. Like it doesn't save where I was, and seems to switch between different tabs when opening/closing it. Kinda feel like I'm missing something there. Are there like, hot keys to go straight into the server browser or something?

Oh, and is there a public chatbox feature? I learned I could type messages by pressing "T" and then typing or whatever, which caused messages to appear above my head (which I figure people can see), but it would also be convenient to have a more typical chatbox on screen.

Anyway, much appreciate for any advice you can give for someone totally new to VRchat (and with very little experience in this second-life type stuff).

Cheers.

pretty new to this as well so can't really help much

I found settings for avatars fading at a certain distance and a limit of how many can be on screen but sadly nothing about the size of avatars

one setting that is nice to change is in "comfort and safety" which allows untrusted urls so you can watch movies or anime in certain worlds

not sure about the chat box but I assume its not a thing since a lot of maps have their own placed within the world and I've only seen chat above peoples heads like you already said

No way to automatically hide giant avatars afaik, best you could do is open your quick menu (ESC) then click on the giant avatar, which will open a menu which lets you do stuff like mute/block etc... Then scroll down and there should be an option to hide their avatar globally, meaning whenever someone uses that avatar in the future it will be automatically hidden for you.

No chat box feature other than what appears above your head.

v----You can ignore the rest of this if you're already using a VRC account----v
Also even if you don't plan on uploading content (avatars/worlds) of your own, I'd still suggest making a VRChat account just because it'll make things easier for you in the future and lets you use the website.

If you have been using a steam account and don't want to lose friends/avatars you may have found then you can merge your steam and VRChat account together and you shouldn't lose anything.

You can do this by opening your large settings menu (not the one in the quick menu) while logged into your steam account and on the left side there should be an "upgrade account" button, click that and then follow the instructions.
{LINK REMOVED} has a custom text box. Problem is Unity knowledge is needed to add it, or hope to find a random avi that already has one. It's notQuest compatible.Unlike the vanilla text box, this one can't be seen unless shaders are shown. But both default and new can be enabled at the same tme

The chat box feature is actually a fairly recent addition, as the developers really don't want that feature around, so this is the best you'll get for chatting. Also by default, the chat is friends only so others who aren't your friend might not be able to see it. Streamer mode also hides chat entirely.

Public instances are always wild, very random, lots of people with avatars that have way too many effects. Once you're part of some friend groups and hang mostly in F+, it'll be much less chaotic and people will behave much better (or generally get kicked or blocked by a lot of people). I'm nearing 3k hours, very few of these are spent in publics.
