Is this a fetish? A new age thing that guys do? I'm not huge into the VR Chat world but it's really hard not to notice that overwhelming number of men dressed as anime women with tails and cat ears...what is all this? Can someone help me understand the culture?

There's never a one size fits all reason for why different people do things, though there could be one reason that's most common. Depending on the individual it could be a fetish, it could be they have a crush on the character, it could be them living out an identity fantasy, it could be something they are doing as a joke for the sake of memes, it could be them trying to get a reaction out of others, a cry for attention, they just happen to like the character, or etc. It could be one reason or several reasons.

Personally, I am heavily introverted and generally just stick to invite only instances by myself or with friends, so I don't know what the most common reason might be.

I use female models most of the time because they look nicer. When I'm relaxing, listening to music and looking at a mirror so I can see my friends and their avatars I prefer looking at a pretty model rather than an eboy model.
