Avatar gesture facial expression bug
I have the Valve Index. While playing VRChat I've always had this issue with avatars that have facial expressions change based on gesture. For some reason when my hands are not defaulting to touching any buttons or TouchPad, my avatars always smile and close their eyes. Every time every avatar. The only way to get them to have a neutral expression is to pull both of my triggers and lock gestures so it sticks that way. But I don't want to do this.

I know it's treating my default gesture as another, Possibly just the both trigger expression since I have 2 avatars that actually do something special when my avatar defaults to the smiling closed eye expression. Does anyone know a fix for this because it's annoying. The only workaround I found is ONE avatar i found that has a built in expression lock feature but I want a permanent general solution.

The downside to an Index's finger tracking is that it plays animations when you are doing the hand gestures. Not touching anything is the "open hand" gesture so it plays any animations linked to that.

YOU have to take care to not trigger animations. Try holding out your pinky at all times. It's that or turning off gestures entirely through the emote menu by holding the menu buttion and looking in those options

Thats dumb. Doing literally nothing forces me to close my eyes and smile. Thats just retarded to have an open hand gesture. But alright if there's no workaround.

Either upload your own avatar and make "open hand" have no facial expression, or learn to toggle lock gestures a lot.

edit: You can also bind toggle gestures to a button on your controllers if you haven't

It gets worse. Older avatars bound ALL of their animations to hand gestures. So you could spam just about anything with the Knuckles. Sounds included.

Just gotta learn to deal with it. It's one reason why I rarely use public avatars anymore

I just have my gestures locked after putting it in the 'default' state but its disappointing I can't use my gestures otherwise or will be forced to use the open hand gesture because the Index doesn't count your hand in a resting position unless the sensors sense your fingers constantly on the triggers.

Welcome to using Index.
And also this is the part where you either find a new avatar that works with what you have and has the toggles necessary for it to function for your system OR you make your own.

A lot of avatars are made for every other VR device as they function near identically controller wise where the index does not.

The 'Idle' hand pose that does not trigger any expressions is resting your thumbs on a button/stick/touchpad, while the other fingers do not touch the grips/triggers.

I've tried this beforehand as that feels more natural than just touching the triggers but thats not the case. None of my avatars change facial or gesture animations just by putting my fingers on the sticks
Cannot believe a nearly 3 year old thread never had any solutions. I’m on Quest 3 and it does it. Fix anything, OP?

Literally not a bug. Literally a feature. Taking your fingers off every button counts as "Hand-Open" gesture, which most people set up as smiling with eyes closed.
This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
