Things like that can and do happen. But as always, the constellation has to be right.
But maybe a small tipp: don't take it to serious, at least not in the beginning. Just roll with it, but don't expect too much. But maybe, after a while it becomes something more serious.

It takes work to make long distance relationships work, but the idea of 'oh, online isn't real' is flawed. You can have a fulfilling online relationship that leads to more and the fact that people STILL think you can't is kind of crazy. Yeah, it can be hard and risky, but so is any relationship.
