90% of people I meet in public worlds are ...
... obnoxious.

Examples today waiting for 10 minutes in the Japanese shrine :

A guy came to my face (like 5 cm of me) to make various mouth noises like licking and slurping.

Another dude asked everybody in the map if they were Swedish in a loop (asking the same people 5 or 6 times) being super annoying.

A 12-year-old yelling the R-word to random people while blasting music and running everywhere.

A guy was having a very loud conversation on Discord with his in-game mic still on, making it very difficult for other people to initiate a conversation.

A silent person went right into my crotch to see if my private parts were modelled or not. He would follow me every time I tried to move until I blocked him.

Two people calling each other N-words for no reasons.

A guy asking me if I was Japanese in a weird and super stereotype "Japanese" accent.

A guy telling me how stupid I was to spend money on trackers.

A guy calling the person next to me "a wh*re" out of the blue, then going away laughing... You could've eared he was with a group of friends behind the mic making fun of people.

And then my friend joined.

Am I super unlucky ?

Every time I wait for a friend to login, I go to a public world in an attempt to meet new people. I feel a bit frustrated by the wasted potential of this app. Instead of having interesting conversations with new people from all over the world, all I get in public is a bunch of annoying nonsense. It goes from obnoxious to outlandishly creepy.

Because these idiots have the ability to hide behind their avatars, they can be as ignorant and obnoxious as they like.
On top of that, most of the annoying of these type of people are the young ones who are just starting out on life's journey and have the need to let go and test their ability to be obnoxious.
Yes, it is annoying and abusive, but chat (even in the old days of just typed chat rooms) has been (and most likely always will be) like that.

The best you can do to avoid this type of environment is set up a private room from your home space as invite your friends and have them invite friends they have and trust.

Don't worry, I've met a lot of nice and interesting people in this game. I know it's totally possible. I'm just a bit sad and frustrated by the wasted potential of the game. I would love to go to random public worlds and be able to have nice and interesting discussion but it never happens. I understand some people having fun being obnoxious but it's getting old pretty quickly.

Yeah, you're right, it's pretty much the internet. But I'm still going to try and interact with people in public worlds. Sometimes you find very cool people. I'm just frustrated by the average interaction I get. And today was impressive, like 90% of people who interacted with me were obnoxious or creepy. I don't want to sound stuck up or anything, I don't mind chaos and weird situations, but when the only thing I get from a public world is being licked on the neck and insulted.... I feel I wasted my time.

I guess I should be happy to be insulted or abused for 9 minutes while I'm waiting 10 minutes for a friend. And I've never said I was offended, I said I was frustrated not being able to have a nice discussion with random people instead of having my groin sniffed or my ear licked by someone. I was surprised about the number of obnoxious and creepy users I got to encounter in less than 10 min. But apparently it's the moral standard out there so never mind. All I'm saying is that you can have fun without insulting people or being outlandishly creepy.

Yes and no. It's always hit or miss when you're dealing with random people.

However, Japan Shrine is one of the most active worlds, meaning people who are in it for the wild west experience or don't have the attention span to scroll for half a second have a high chance of going there.

So the super basic advice for avoiding carnage in public worlds is:
  • When going to popular worlds, don't pick the instance with the highest player count.
  • Explore different worlds and pick up the patterns of what kinds of people are attracted to them. You might find your new "go-to public place".
thats the whole fun thing about this game the randomness and the new encounters better to enjoy it because its fun

These are good advice, thanks. Yeah, I guess the Japanese shrine is a bit chaotic. I tried the Nier Automata world this morning. There was about 6 or 7 people and they were way nicer to me. I managed to have a nice discussion with a Korean guy, it was pretty cool.

I don't mind the fun, I'm just craving meaningful interactions. Being yelled at by someone or insulted or being made fun of might be entertaining for some but not for me. These types of behaviours are getting old very quickly. It might be OK if it were mixed with normal interactions but in the situation I described it wasn't. My complaint wasn't that some people were just obnoxious but that almost everybody around me were abusive or creepy to the point I was unable to have a basic conversation. I don't get why people continue to tell me to lighten up or to enjoy it. There is nothing enjoyable in what I described in my OP. Even when the toxicity is not directed towards me (when the person next to me was being made fun of and called a wh*re) it's still not an enjoyable experience. Having to argue about what I described in my first message tells a lot about this community. I guess people that are used to behave poorly in the game think it's totally normal and defend their behaviour in this forum as well. I'm not asking for the perfect community, but at least being able to have normal conversations without having to block people left and right every time I go in a public world.

Most of the people that aren't like that tend to hang out with trusted friends in private worlds, and generally only venture into the public worlds as groups to meet new people. This is sadly just the nature of anonymous interactions, it attracts trolls.

I would try to make a few friends, and then just meet friends of friends to grow your circle. You can also try public worlds that aren't as populated, as trolls tend to look for big rooms to annoy the most people as possible at a time.

If you're a female, expect that to happen more to you than anyone else. Learn to block and mute people instead of complaining. Complaining will not help. Many have tried.

Just so you don't get pissy at me, I'm also a female. Just block the annoying kids and people.
Nothing to do with me being a girl, I know a lot of guys who don't like being abused either. The person who was called a wh*re next to me was a guy with a female avatar. Also, blocking everyone in the room is not an optimal solution either, it just makes you alone. Muting people is even worse because it's not uncommon to have "retaliatory blocking" after muting an annoying person. It happened many times to me. I once muted a very loud and annoying person who was obnoxiously eating potato chips and when he realised what I did he went in front of me, showed me the finger and blocked me (sad to use a valve index that way). He then used his friends who didn't block me to basically make fun of me until I decided to leave. I could have blocked the entire group, but it would have made me the very last person left in this place so it doesn't solve anything. And my first message wasn't just meant to complain, but to check if I was unlucky or if it was normal. Apparently, it's normal.

If you encounter an entire room of idiots like that, your best bet is to leave, as any normal people will generally do the same anyway. Try to find a public room with some decent people and talk to them. If you're the only person in the room that you don't want to block, you probably don't want to be there anyway.

Yeah, I don't spend much time in public worlds anymore. As some of you said in this thread, it's safer to invite people I know in private places. I only go in public to wait for people or check a new world. Usually I stay silent just to test the waters and if people sound nice and chill I try to speak to them (which is not an easy task for me, I'm rather shy). I just really enjoy interacting with new people. When it happens it feels great.(๑˃̵ᴗ˂̵)و

Yeah just keep in mind that there are always thousands of people in the public rooms. If the room you're in is full of idiots, just leave. You might be missing out on finding some lifelong friends in another room by waiting around with the idiots. Also just some advice, it's probably a good idea to learn not to let idiots get under your skin. Life becomes 100x more enjoyable once you learn that lesson.
