So, any tips on overcomign Social Anxiety within VRChat?
Like a few other people, I am INCREDIBLY shy around people and in awkward situations. I've heard VRChat is great at helping you overcome that however, well, it is hard for me to even say hi to anyone. (Despite my lack of a mic which I will get soon enough) As soon as somebody approaches me and tries to communicate I just either run away or shut down the game, playing with my friends is a no-go since my only friend who has the same interests in video games as me doesn't want to help.
Once I am with my friends or people I am comfortable with I do kinda come out of my shell but that effect does not last long. I know nobody can see me and I can always leave the server if I am bothered by anything but that does not help. No matter how many pep talks I give myself I still shy away.

Is there like, anyone else here with the same situation as mine?

Sometimes it helps to realize that people don't care about your social awkwardness as much as you actually think they do. Shy people are naturally more paranoid and think that people care more than they actually do, but most people are pretty chill ( the ones worth your time ) If they do make remarks, they aren't really worth talking with anyways.

You can also just come out and let them know right off the bat that you are super shy. You will know right away whether they are understanding or not. I'm still pretty shy myself, and I catch myself thinking way too long about how to approach someone without ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ it up. I started my convos off with small comments, and it helped.

Hope you're able to find a nice group of people to hang out with on here, who respect your shyness. [:

Use a text to speech app. I do it all the time. People are just jerks and find me weird or unreliable, but that's not news to me.

Ye someone got real mad at me too... ahaha I'm an okish speaker in person, but when it comes to phone or vid chat.. or VR chat I freez up.

So if me, you and a few other awkward people can group up and join XD maybe it that would help out, I saw some cool game rooms we can all just chill in that would be fun.
edit: or eaven a discord group sort of situation.

Also ignore the ignarant people replying here... they clearly dont understand how a lot of people work.

I'm currently looking for friends on VR Chat but I'm way too shy to go and talk to people. I don't wanna go out and just yell. HI I NEED FRIENDS BUT I DON*T KNOW HOW!!! Yeah... If anyone would wanna play with me then id be really happy. It's my first time doing this and i don't wanna be cringy. But i feel like this way will be easier than go out and talk with people in VR Chat blind.

If you wanna play with me then you can just add me on steam.

I always love to tell: Just do it!

But its easier said than done, but its weird, at least for me.

Online it feels weird as f*ck, but in the outside world i dont have a problem socialising.

omg im the same ;-; my first time playing a bunch of ppl came up to me and talking to me with mic but i just looked down and left :c now its a bit better and i just look at ppl if theyre talking to me but still feel shy

but im less shy when theres only a few ppl around and no one has a mic, so i join worlds with like only a few ppl on them. but if everyone else is already playing together then idk i just leave

and some worlds are scarier than others, idk why but the great pug is the scariest.

i spent like a hour just standing outside the room that everyone was in, then i got the courage to go in, someone said hi, so i went up to him, but he was just saying hi to someone behind me so i was just ignored and felt dumb :c

Just be yourself, don't care what others think about you.

Honestly my 10 first hours of VRChat I never talked because I was shy, but really it was all in my head, VRChat made me more Sociable then ever and introducing myself to new people, in-fact close friends with them today still and play other games together.

Hi Bless! While I don't have extreme social anxiety like you, I do consider myself to be a pretty friendly person! I enjoy singing, dancing, making new friends, and deep personal conversations.
I can take you for a stroll around VrChat or we can just sit and talk for a while if you'd like.

You made this post so just by doing that you are breaking out your comfort zone just to talk to people so you could take that as a personal victory to help you.

I'm late as hell on this but I do have the same issue. I have severe social anxiety so when people try to talk to me I just dont say anything, just wave or pet them for whatever reason or I move away and maybe go back if someone else is being the life of the party so there is no focus on me anymore, even irl too(not the petting part though lmao). What usually works for me is using a voice changer because for some reason hiding my voice makes me feel alright socializing to an extent (you probably have a mic by now so give it a shot if you're still struggling).
My real only advice is join rooms that aren't packed with people. If you join a room that, lets say has a max of 20 players, and there is over 15 it wont help anything at all when so many people are going crazy in there. Join rooms that have maybe around 4-5 at least so it feels more like a comfortable setting to talk to someone in general. Just do that for some time and you'll start branching out to bigger rooms etc. Works for me kind of, but hopefully it will work for you.

If you need a friend or anything to help you in game or something just add me @ "Spooky." or you could add me on steam
I'm not the best with helping but something is better than nothing, if all goes bad we can just run from socializing together

I know this is an old thread, but I'm going through a similar thing myself. I really want to play vr chat, but I'm too nervous to play or talk to anyone on there. I am trying to 'deal with it' but sometimes I just log out straight away when I find myself in a social situation.

I'm always down to play vr chat with you if you want. Here's my name - O̷p̷t̷i̷c̷™
