Valve index?
Is that VR headset really worth the whopping 1k? I used to have an original oculus Headset but I thought it was ♥♥♥♥ and I sold it.

Now, I'm thinking about getting back into VR. But really don't want to spend a grand to achieve the Ultra quality and Amazing experience

If you're talking about the Dev kits from oculus, that's very understandable. The Oculus line up has had extremely major changes compared to those times. I'd recommend getting a Rift S a try. Because no the Index is not the end all to quality DEPENDING on how you define the quality. The Index is what I'd call the first intersection in VR that gives way to going wireless, better audio and mics, better hardware design and philiosphy, or improvements in software and resolutions. The index is a great point for this.

I made this post before looking into the index vs Rift S. The Index wins
The only thing the rift S does better in the comparison is the Display (like the screen itself) and a option to do wireless. Everything else, the index does better. Besides the Price tag.

Also, I didn't have a dev kit, it was like the OG original Oculus Rift that would be sold at your local best buy a long time ago. Obviously they upgraded nowadays. But I want the best of the best.

All headsets currently do. Including Oculus. It's just people talk about the Index more as people want the Index more. The issues stem from Covid-19.

Parts on the other headset can break, it's just a lot more upsetting when you throw down $1000 and your index breaks. Like this:

https://www.reddit.com/r/ValveIndex/comments/edwyuu/the_first_time_i_see_an_indexs_head_strap/

This happened to my friend and they are back to using their Vive while they send their Index in as it's still under warranty. The index apparently has a few cheaply made parts on it that tend to break easily, but that's all covered by the warranty you get when you purchase one. You shouldn't let the fear of a part breaking on your headset decide which one you buy.

Well why it's worth it? It's has 90hz to 144hz support for the headset. Very smooth gameplay with it.
Valve gives you advanced rma have to send my headset in but the customer service is perfect just go for the Index if you want the best.

pretty much comes down to:
Are you on a budget? Rift S
Are you not? Index

If you think of it's basic components (monitor, speakers, keys, pointer), it's absolutely worth it. I've used the same cheap input/output items for a decade while my computer has been upgraded 4 times. The Index is just another input/output method that will last forever if you treat it right, and it's specs will be good for at least as long as 1080p60 has been the gold standard of flat-panel games.

When someone asks for headset recommendations, I almost always fall back to three particular headsets.

On a budget? Rift S, hands down. The display is decent and the tracking works well despite being 'inside-out' tracking.

Want full body tracking in VRChat eventually or want the freedom to later swap out controllers or headset for Index pieces? Original Vive, though sadly they're being phased out and are no longer manufactured, so grabbing one brand new might take a search.

Don't care about money? PC a beast? Index. Cross compatability with Vive gear and body trackers. A display so clear that, one of my friends describes it "like you're looking at desktop quality even though it's a VR headset".

Of course, you CAN get full body tracking with the Rift S, but that requires a mix of hardware and is generally more nuisance than it's worth, and will end up more expensive than a Vive if you decide to use Vive trackers mixed with the Rift.

And naturally, there's other lesser headsets out there, but I've next to no experience with them.
People say the Pimax is the highest resolution and largest field of view out there, and the new Vive Cosmos Elite uses base station tracking like the original Vive, so I think the Cosmos Elite is supposed to be the Vive 2.0 or something, but it comes in at a hefty price, larger than the Index at this point.

Just want to throw my 2 cents in there real quick as I have experience with these HMDs. Stay as far away as you can from the Cosmos and Pimax. The initial Vive was a decent HMD when it launched as a joint venture between HTC and Valve. Valve is no longer holding HTC's hand as they are now making their own headsets without HTC, and since then it has become very clear they have no idea what they're doing/know what they're consumers want and the Cosmos is pretty laughable. As for the Pimax, it's very cheap feeling, the extra field of view you get is incredibly blurry and super warped (the actual amount of clear screen fov is about the same as the original Vive). Overall if you have to choose between an Index and a Pimax, I would say the Index is a substantially better HMD. Otherwise the rest is pretty accurate.

I went from the rift (CV1) for two years to an Index and yes it's absolutely worth every penny. However I never found an issue with the CV1 and would still recommend it to someone on a super tight budget but willing to roll the dice on a second hand unit having a non faulty cable. If you really didn't like the CV1, you might have more of an issue with VR over the individual headset itself.
