Actully in Sansar for example text and voice work fine together, as VR user the text chat floats to your left (you can open and close it anytime) and dosent get in your way even when opend and you can interact with people just fine be either talking with them or typing in a response into the text chat with a virtual keyboard.
Would not be hard to implent and be a nice and optional thing to have, you know there are people out there with hearing impairments or who just have a super hard time to talk in voice for various reasons.
Currently it's really inconvenient when you're trying to organize something with friends, you have no options other than to use 3rd party applications to communicate outside of game - which some people won't check when they're in VR. Your only other option is to go to every world that your friends are in and communicate with them 1 by 1 which is bothersome with how buggy the game is.
Even considering voice chat, it can be really difficult to hear what people say at times, especially if the world you're in has audio playing or when multiple people are talking at the same time and some people are just quiet. There's no option to adjust volume levels for specific people.
I see no reason for why a messaging feature can't be implemented, it could be made optional for those who do not want it. The chat messages wouldn't have to be made visible in the world, they could just be viewed while in the menu.
