Social Anxiety in vr chat?
Hey everyone

I've heard that vrchat is agood place to try and overcome social anxiety or at least numb it down a bit, but I just can't seem to do it. Its so bad that whenever I hear someone else talk ingame i get panicked and quit the game, however, I also really want to make friends. so today I've been trying on and off to force myself to not quit but I've gotten nowhere. I'm not a native english speaker and even though my english is normally pretty good whenever I anxious or anything like that, that all goes right out the window. I'm also a bit on the younger side, I'm not a kid (or maybe some of you would say i am but technically I'm not heheh) so I also get scared that people will not want to talk to be because of my voice, but to be fair I haven't gotten that far yet.

Anyone in a similar situation?

Embrace the weirdness and you will be fine. I suffer from some social anxiety but this place is perfect to experience magic.

Imagine, that you aren't yourself, but someone that's talking over the phone with someone. And since you can't see the persons face, or body that you're talking to, that can maybe help with the problem you're having, and try to use humor as much as possible, try to experience the weirdness on the game, that's why it's worth having.

I feel ya man, I've got horrid social anxiety. It sometimes gets so bad I have seizures. Anyways, the key (atleast in my case) is to get online often. Get used to avatars around you, and hearing people's voices. You don't even have to speak. If someone is talking about a topic you know about or enjoy, put a few words in. That's how you start discussions. I find it easier to talk when I'm responding to a question someone has purposly asked me, and I like techno babble, so a lot of times I listen in on people's conversations about that and most of the time people usually end up asking me questions. Yesturday, I had an hour long convo about programming with some guy who I'd listened to when he was talking about it with another dude. Be yourself and the conversation will find you. The best places to go for this stuff are really popular places. Scary, but then you can listen in on stuff and get more comfortable in social situations. There are usually a ton of people running around, so you aren't going to stick out like a sore thumb or anything. And if someone tries to talk to you when you don't feel like talking, go to a different world or even just pretend you don't hear them. It's a computer game, its not like they can call you out for lying or anything when they don't even know who you are in real life.

Dude, literally the same here. I want more friends but i can't do it, cuz it is always so awkward at first and i get nervous. Everything you mentioned is a complete copy and paste over to me.

I totally feel you my man, honestly I just say wing it you know? That’s how I get past a lot of my things, though it’s easier said than done to be fair

I am in such a similar situation it is painful! I barley want to talk and get such bad anxiety even when I hear someones voice. I've been getting better though, so if you'd like a friend, maybe we could meet up in VR? I sign in using steam so.

The worse step is the first one tbh; It take me forvever to talk to a stranger but once I start, it get way easier after (or at least with that person).
hey,im new on steam so uuh, yeah you can feel free to send if you want to talk or anything.
