i was a desktop user for about 170 hours, a good way ive found to make friends while i was playing desktop was to join the world never have i ever. you dont need to talk to have fun in that world.

My advice as someone whom was mute for about a month into vrchat. Grab an avatar that can do basic response functions, example: an avatar that holds yes/no signs. Or get an avatar that is suppose to be mute and use your resources around you to try and tell a story. I also do agree with @your_white_knight

The best thing I can tell you is you could try a text to speech setup... where you type and and it talks for you... plenty of videos out there on YouTube that show how. You can also use the emotes and emojis if you're quick enough to pull up your UI and get to one before the person gets bored of you and moves on to find someone to chat/vr with...
a text to speech system is a wonderful idea

You can also go to worlds with pens in them so you can write what you want to say. I have seen lots of mute desktop users communicate that way.

I am a mute in VRC but I do have VR and this helps immensely. I also use my own custom avatars with Snail Marker in the right index finger for writing. Desktop will certainly cause an issue but it's not impossible. Still, when I first entered VRC I used Clownfish to mask my voice. Clownfish is free and you can do a lot of fun things with your voice. This is nice because you can respond and either build confidence in talking or use it minimally as needed.

Two things though, most people are there to chat and until you find some friends it will seem a bit off putting and some talkers, especially the younger ones, get really annoyed by voice changers so keep it subtle and consistent. I just altered my pitch to a moderate level and no one ever really had an issue with it.

Lastly, mutes are the best. When you get VR and havea good friend group you will find that they will talk for you and often interpret for you which adds a whole new layer of fun.

Use google translate and loop it through your mic.

Honestly the game needs text chat, some players don't like to speak and that's fine but what about the deaf community. I've seen videos about handicapped users having fun in VR but the one handicap it's not accessible is deafness. Doesn't help that a lot of people have ♥♥♥♥ mics.

Played a lot of Second Life in my day and if it had anything going for it, it was accessibility.

I haven't visited it so I don't know what it offers. But I have seen a world for deaf users while world hopping. Maybe there is something there to help with communication. I do agree 100% that text chat would be a very welcome addition to the game. It gets a bit tiring jumping from game to discord to talk with some of my mute/hard of hearing friends.

I'm actually a bit surprised that there's no text chat already. Might be on purpose because the game was mainly made for VR and typing in VR isn't a lot of fun when you have to do it often, so I guess they just wanted to promote people actually talking and / or using hand gestures to communicate with others.

Still, I'd welcome a text chat, preferably above the player's head because if it would just show in the corner of your screen it'd be near useless for VR users.

It's essentially VRChat without VR functionality, rather dated as it came out back in 2003 but it has a number of social features that games and even steam to this day don't have.

One in particular was that you could choose who could and could not see your online status.

Infact you could choose who could or could not....

- See your online status (which included login notifications)
- Track you on the World Map (game was absolutely massive)
- Modify your Objects
- Teleport to you
- Send you teleport requests

Linden Labs respected your privacy.

being a mute isnt gonna help that problem tho, it’s only gonna make it worse

I'm only a mute when everyone's much younger than me or the conversations seem pointless and stale. Which both happen often.

But then there are those magical times you meet someone without the personality of an angsty flirtatious brick and or isn't a little e-hoodlum. That's when the chatterbox come out :squirtyay:
