VRChat

Anyone using Windows MR headset?
Does it work well with VRChat? How is the tracking and controllers etc? Personally I want a Vive but considering I can pick up a WMR headset for second hand for around 1/3 of the price of a new Vive here... is it worth?

Windows Mixed Reality headsets work pretty well in VRChat, provided you install SteamVR for Windows MR plugin. Overall, the controllers are adequate for VRChat, their traicking weakness become problematic in more active games where you frequently swing your arms outside your field of view.

Which Windows MR Headset do you prefer for VRChat?

Thanks for the input, I just picked up a HP WMR headset and it works pretty well for VRChat!

That said, there are instances of where the controllers DO lose tracking if you leave them out of view of the front cameras for more than 10 secs or so, and the gyros then have to keep predicting roughly where they were last and if you move it elsewhere out of that time, like behind your back... they will get confused. Makes for hilarious hand movements in game sometime though lol.

The only solution is to look at your hands now and then to reset the tracking, or move your hands back into view for a sec... but I am overall super happy with it considering how cheap I picked one up for which was 1/4 the price of a Vive. Great entry level for VRChat without spending a small fortune on the more premium headsets.

@Tokari
I think all WMR Headsets generally are all the same and likely work the same in VRChat. Same controllers. I think the Samsung Odyssey has higher resolution is the only main difference.

My friend got the VR MR stuff before I was able to get my Rift that I've heard many complaints about him using it on the controller side of things. It works well when it works. It's fun seeing him in the world being able to interact and everything, yet something always gives out (mostly the controllers). One of the controlers, or mic not working, or something. It seems to be 70-80% stable.

My friend uses a 'Dell Visor' for $490 USD, yet looking into getting a Rift, or a Kinect set-up. I'm happy with my Rift. Vive seems to be something you'd get if you're a "pro" while a Rift is something more adaptable for the controls & buttons you have going on. Rift is recommended for VRChat while the Vive seems to be for everything else.

I'd recomend the Acer AH101 for it due to it being made for VR Multiplayer games.

Appreciate the reply, however, I ended up getting an Oculus Rift sometime late 2018 lol

Wow.. never thought I'd see this thread again... UwU

Might as well update on my HP Windows MR headset. I haven't used it in probably 6 months to a year or so, so I tried to fire it up today and it was... well, dead. Last time I took it for a spin it worked so no idea if it was a software update issue somewhere (I have all the latest drivers of everything)... but the headset display no longer turns on. You can hear the USB plugging in noise and the WMR welcome screen/setup thing pop ups on my monitor.. but yeah no go. Tried everything, tried different HDMI/usb ports, different computer... and now I'm just ready to call it a day on this piece of crap. I have an inkling suspicion it could be the HDMI part of the cable failing but who knows.. it could just be the headset itself too. There is no option to buy replacement cables afaik as well.

Overall, I've heard so many bad things about WMR from the software, drivers to build quality so I don't recommend them at all at this stage anymore. I am considering getting an Oculus Rift S to replace it, since it seems similar to the HP with the inside-out tracking but with better specs, and is probably more supported by a bigger company... the only issue is it's still $649 AUD over here, so it's going to take some saving sadly...or wait for a good sale. I guess my WMR only put me about $150 (secondhand)out of of pocket, so it wasn't too bad for a temporary VR headset... and for the amount of use I did use it for, it was pretty decent especially for VRChat itself. So go for it if you have limited budget but do know the risks and what you are getting yourself into..

Speaking of odd deaths I'm aware that Oculus did everything they could to stir up software related troubles for Oculus Rift so it would die a premature death. You know, the whole 'No HDMI Connection' error nonsense when you know it genuinely works. They most likely did this (while feigning ignorance) to force people to jump onto Oculus Rift S & Oculus Quest...... I'm posting this as an 'awareness' thing while also reacting to Mirai's posting.

The headsets can last, it seems there is some trickery in play here. What Mirai noted is familiar to me. VR headsets can have a long shelf life, they're however being purposely nudged to be short-lived in certain aspects so you can keep jumping onto newer & newer headsets. Maybe its coincidental, just not with what I've seen with my Oculus Rift. I kept pushing it and pushing it with all the driver tricks I knew... It claimed it didn't work, yet still kept working with various work arounds. Same could probably be said for Microsoft's VR headsets.

Many people caught onto this one way or another around the same time whether they're aware of it fully or not. People ended up buying a new headset roughly around the same time.

If that is true from Oculus, then that would be pretty shady indeed... but I don't think they would sabotage their own product though, there are a few people I know that are still using them so it must be something hardware or software on their end. I don't know anyone with WMR headsets so I can't say if anything dodgey is happening here with mine... I'm still almost certain a part of my kit has failed because of the build quality though... it did feel real cheaply made in my time with it and never felt like a premium product.

Either way, I don't have much choice with either companies at this point.. its either I go with WMR again or Oculus.. HTC Vive (all variants) are way too expensive for me. Just hopeful if I do get the Oculus Rift S as replacement, it wont die as well 6 month down the track lol... but I'm sure there would be some kind of warranty for that. :)

I haven't really gotten any issues using the Oculus Rift even after all of the software updates and such. The only hassle would be low spec and stuff but that would be obvious from the requirements considering I'm running it on a GTX 960 but even then, it still runs well. I'm not aware of any of the software problems within Oculus or any of the sort. :/

To the two replies above:

Strange..... There are alarming amounts of 'No HDMI Connection' threads found for Oculus Rift, as well as people having tweeted about it. I guess there is still something I"m not seeing then.........

I also had the issue with low spec, though ironically find my Valve Index doing better than anything Oculus related. Oculus was simply bloated and too narcissistic on my end that I'm somewhat happy it imploded on itself.

Wish I had more to say about WMR. Guess I don't. I'm just simply happy with my Valve Index because it finally runs the way VR headsets should be able to run. My friends had the same results I had with Oculus tantruming, then Valve Index solving their problems.
