Put the camera in front of the hat?
So if clipping planes don't work out, you could try putting the hat in a new layer and disabling that layer in the camera's render settings. This will remove it from your perspective completely, but it should still be visible on your avatar for other players and it will show up when you look at your reflection.
isnt that just for the camera in unity itself? if i change the "near" option on the camera near my avatar i can see further trough it yes,but that doesnt change the view of the characters viewball to ignore the hair.
