Custom Models / Avatars

I'm very new to this gamem only started yesterday (also using HTC Vive) and I'm seeing a lot of people with custom avatars but I have absolutely no idea on how to do that.

What do I need to do to be able to get some of these customs models myself? Is there a specific place you can download these? and also how am I even supposed to get the models to work ingame if I do download some?

You can visit other worlds that usually have selectable avatars in them and get one from there, however doing it this way means you'll lose it as soon as you log off. It's actually kinda difficult to get a permanent avatar, requires going through Unity and something else...But if you can figure it out then best of luck to you.
