do shields matter beyond free stats?

will i ever have to make a choice beyond str con on a shield, or will i find one that has a massive amount more stats but lower block rates?

The block rates will stay at 25% once you reach a certain point. It's "free" stats (the other classes get double the amount of stats on their weapons since they have no off-hand).

damn, was hopeing at some point id find a shield with some insane stats but litttle to no block so it was an actual choice.

Really, the only choice in gear you equip (when you don't buy mushrooms) is "is this normal item with just +one stat so much better than this old epic?". I usually go by this - equip the normal item if it's +stat is more than my main stat + constitution on the epic combined. Though at my level even without buying shrooms I'm just fully geared in epics now. Except for weapons. You want to switch them for higher overall dps quite often.

all my gear is str and constatutuion, and if it doesnt have one of those i better be able to put a gem in it, right now im mineing another str gem for boots, the thing is only a +5 con upgrade, but it adds 60~ int too, on top of being nearly 400 armor better then my current boots,

weapon wise, it was a bit harder to switch that out due to every weapon that was better then what i had had no strengh to it, kind of hard to replace something that has 113 str on it. that said, an axe with a 108 average and 92 str fell on my lap, and i put a 60 con crystal in it and im happy.

wish i had a better shield though, have 2, 1 of them is 107 str, one is 230 luck... str beat out the luck one a while ago

asside from that, im working on getting my fortress up to level 15... ♥♥♥♥ takes for ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ever to do, but thats when i start farming black gems.

You really should have just your main stat and con on your items (and since you already have gems, items with sockets are always better than ones without). Luck is not important and the side stats are near worthless. Like with everything in this game, be patient, you'll find them in a shop or drop eventually.

that shield was amazeing when it took me from 20% crit ti just under 50% but at this point it only adds 10 so its not worth it.

I can't agree with the statement that luck is not important. I am at 50% critical hit b/c of my luck, and I am able to kill dungeon bosses in the mid 80's range at only level 62 because of it. (Of course I have focus on my main stat and constitution.)

Yeah, great, I'm at 50% crit because I have epics. You have no need to waste item slots specifically on it. Also since long ago I've been beating bosses 100 levels higher than I am.
