How to obtain set items?
I've seen some items have an extra attribute on them with a crystal in the corner. How do i obtain these items?

The crystals in the corner of an items are sockets. Every item has a chance to have a slot for a gem to be "set" in.
It's random.

As Keba said, every item in the game (with the exception of Shields for Warriors, also they require 25 level charracter) has a chance to be have a socket. You can fill them with gems that you can acquire in your fortress (Also availeble after reaching 25 level)

Yes, there is items with sockets and then there is "set items" for the sake of fashion/achievement. Here Leander spoils which items belong to which sets http://forum.sfgame.us/showthread.php?p=57878
