I love Joshua and Estelle too, hell Estelle is my favorite character ever, but you gotta let go of your characters and change the spotlight at times so that they don't get tired. They basically finished their main arc in SC and now are just playing catch up with Renne. After that they are basically done with their character arcs. Kevin and Ries have a lot of interesting interactions so don't worry.
Also, trust me when I say this, this game does do a lot of world building for the future games.
No they aren't. The 3rd game demotes Joshua & Estelle to being pointless side characters.
They have a couple of very brief side-stories that feature them, but which have absolutely nothing to do with the main plot, the main plot which they areboth irrelevant to.
They could have entirely deleted both Joshua & Estelle from this game by making very few changes to the script...which just goes to show how totally meaningless they are to this game.
But they aren't really doing that in this game either. This game is mostly irrelevant to that plot point too.
Someone who skipped Sky the 3rd and went to straight from SC to Crossbell would see the real development of that plot point happening in the Crossbell games, and even after skipping the 3rd, they would have missed almost nothing in regards to that point.
Although 3rd does have crucial development for the Renne character, which the player would be missing if they skipped 3rd.
They don't play as much of a role as in sky fc/sc but if you plan to contrinue playing trails it's very very worth it. Game serves as both and epilogue of sky, telling you about events that happened SC, about some character's fates, explores characters in more depth and sets up a lot of future plot threads that continues in Crossbell, Erebonia and Calvard.
It feels very different, as there are not that many people to talk to. But it's absolutely packed with important content and lore. If you liked Estelle, at the very least check out moon door 4 on youtube if you don't plan to play trails further.
It won't be the last time you'll see Estelle and Joshua in games either. If you plan to continue trails journey, sky 3rd is a must. Also read the short manga Ring of Judgement about Estelle and Joshua and what they were doing after SC, it mostly happens shortly before 3rd (and also ties into the beginning hours of tales from zero).
My favorite protagonist is Estelle as well, but crossbell games are about just as good as Sky or some might say even better.
