what do you like the most with trails ?
if you like the battle system try Grandia 2
edit: grandia isn't on sale atm :(
I'd argue that the "good" Tales games are as good as Trails, but the series has gone pretty downhill. Out of the ones on Steam, I'd really only recommend Symphonia. Zestiria is one of the lowest points in the series, and Berseria is a companion to Zestiria and as such I basically refuse to check it out because wow, how the heck did Zestiria get an anime and a companion game, it was baaaaaaad.
(To explain my complaints: Zestiria had a strong first few hours. But at maybe 10% of the way into the game, any and all effort was just abandoned and you can tell exactly when the devs went "screw it, let's rush it." I love the better games in the series for character development on a level comparable to - and at times surpassing - Trails, and Zestiria is a massive disappointment for opening with such promise and then going LOLNOPE.)
I'll recommend Persona 3/4 - not 5, because the cast has less chemistry and its translation is very very uneven, whereas 3 and 4's were basically perfect. (5's still good - really good - but it's not as much 'like Trails' as the others.) There's also a really old PS1 RPG called Koudelka that has some of the best character interaction I've ever seen. The first Disgaea might do it for you. (It's not the deepest story, but it's good, and it's funny.) Planescape: Torment has really great characters and a great story. Tides of Numenera, not as good, still pretty damn good.
Also, you might want to look into visual novels. Steins;Gate and the sequel S;G 0 are both great. Hotel Dusk is pretty good. 999 / VLR are both great.
As for the subject at hand, I'll second Grandia II. The port's got some rough edges, but it's another turn-based JRPG with a great story and soundtrack.
The 2002 port that I finished years ago was hot garbage. I have so many horror stories about getting it to work and having to put up with the bugs and glitches that I did. For instance, the game claimed that it's designed for Windows 9x and did not mention XP support. I was able to get it working on XP but not 98 or ME. WTF?
Ubisoft should be fined for releasing such a garbage port and refusing to patch it.
Either way, the game could benefit from dungeon maps and save anywhere.
But if u want tactical turn combat u can also try Disgaea 5
i'm playing through suikoden ii, and it does have a more intricate political world that follows on from the first, but unfortunately the localisation is about as terrible as you'd expect from these old games, so i can't really comment on the quality of the writing.
the jrpgs i'm most interested in currently would be tactics ogre, lunar, koudelka/shadow hearts, baten kaitos and growlanser. anyone know if any of these are like trails?
