I think those are part of the Elven mothertree, which would make them only usefull in Act 4. Maybe even locked to Sebille's quest line.

I forget the dialogue options, but each item he offers you is almost a joke relating to what you tell him. Something along the lines of you telling him you need help lifting your burdens so he gives you rope, a tool you can use to physically lift stuff. I dunno the dialogue leading up to the seeds, but I'm pretty sure they follow the same path, but the seeds are rather useless if I'm not mistaken. He can however, give you a rock. Which is actually a ruby that can net a decent chunk of gold at such a low level.

Using Sebille, I was able to get a ruby. I just answered the questions honestly from her perspective, as she wants to get revenge. The ruby sold for a 100 GP.
