How Do You Enter the Houndmaster Room?

I'm in the dungeon area and just killed 4 source hounds that had no loot. The next room has a crossbow and a dog in a cage, but the gate is locked. I can't find anyway to open the gate.

There is a dog in Front of the cave with the elves (south from Fort Joy).
With Pet Pal he gives you a Quest and the key.
Without Petpal you can dig out the Key (behind the lake near the dog)

you can also get a red ball from the source hound magister below you in the dungeon area, that pacifies all the source hounds if you don't want to fight them yet
