I'm on my first play-through, so I don't know much about how different builds handle, but I put a lot of points into health. Pretty much every time I level up, I do +1 health and +1 intel/strength/finesse (depending on character). It might be a really nooby way to play, but it's been kinda working so far.
Enemy levels are shown under their health bar too, so look out for that. In the worst case, try to pull back and lure the enemy out to a location that is more to your advantage. When I first started I would stand in an ambush spot and get creamed. Now I pull every dirty trick I can think of... even if it's just teleporting an enemy really far away, to buy some time.
As you gain more abilities, the tactical possibilities open up more, and you can try a lot of different approaches. There's a lot to take in at first, but experimenting is part of the fun.
It's normal at the start where equipments are not really good but even at the end you are not supposed to take more than one or two hits before getting stunned.
This game emphasis a lot offense over defense (tanks are useless cause ai avoid them and focus on lowest health/Armor). Never put any point in constitution and focus on stunning/killing enemies, it's the best way to avoid damage. Also you can use spells like chameleon cloak to avoid damages.
Check enemy levels before you fight. If the enemy is higher level than you, you've missed stuff somewhere else. Probably worth going back and doing that stuff and coming back later.
Also, don't invest into CON to try and counter this. Invest into more damage instead. This game will punish you if you play defensively. Don't focus on healing unless its to remove CC effects. Focus on damaging the enemy and applying your own crowd control so they can't fight back.
I'm doing Explorer difficulty my first run through, to learn. It's less punishing.
Once I've completed an Explorer run, I'll likely try a Classic run with the Origins I didn't use.
Story difficulty I would say is too easy though; not as helpful to learn. I solo'd Act 1 with a single character on Story mode, without using (or knowing about) Lone Wolf.
dont walk up to the enemy - bye doing so you waist your turn just to get closer to the enemy. if you wait or hide. the enemy comes to you and waists in that process his actionpoints.
also you can play the game bye doing normal atacks on the enemy but it is very very inefficiant. so you are not suppost to deal dmg bye atacking them via normal auto-atacks.. you are suppost to do dmg via spells.
you can also CC(crowd controll) your enemys once their physical or magical armor is down. and in the early game getting that down is not that hard.
also remember some enemys are weaker against sertain type of dmg.. for example you can use 2 heal spells against undeath enemys. one from the school tree huntsmen and one from water/hydro.
you can also take the talent torturer if you want.. meaning your poison or fire spells will ignore the enemys magic shild and it will damage their healthbar directly.. even some abilities will efect them directly.
you can dissmiss a partymember and take another in your team and make him a thievery guy to steal all the gear /books/money you need to equip your other charakters.
also a charakter who uses mele/physical dmg should get strenght over wits or memorys.. same goes for huntsmen/dagger (fines) and wizards (intelg).. alsways that attribute first then a bit wits and then memorys. you dont need using your points to for constitution. you can .. but you actualy dont need to.
making a tank is not usefull cuz this game is based on who can kill / deal more damage. not who can survive longer.
you can give all your charakter 1 point into summoning if you want. so they all can summon a monster before fight .. wich will deal dmg or absorb dmg from enemys. putting more points in it is only good if you want your char to be fully summoner.
polymorph is also usfull because you can use adreanaline and use then camilien cloark from polymorph.
you can always use a potion or scoll in fight.. it cost you onl 1 Actionpoint.
try to be always the same lvl as your oponents or atleast only 1 lvl under them.
those are some things from top of my head. there are sure more.
