Fane on Fort Joy island
I'm starting to wonder if it's possible to play with Fane as my main character, when I get to Fort Joy Island. All the prison guards want to kill Fane on sight, and at level 2, I can't even begin to fight back. Beyond the guards, so many othet NPCs just turn and run when they see Fane. I've managed a few interactions by just seperating the Red Prince to talk to the NPCs, while I leave poor Fane somehere out of sight. I know later on I'll get the mask back. But how can I progress to the point of getting Fane's mask back? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Putting any headwear should mask you, even if it doesnt look like it. If you are playing undead/fane, game should have given you some kind of basic headwear.
Just make sure you have something equipped in your head, hands, legs, feet and chest slot. As long as there’s something in all of those slots, you won’t be attacked. If you do, you should have a buff called “Veiled Undead” or something like that. He should come equipped like that, so just don’t remove any gear and you should be fine.

This is at the beginning of the game. He has little to no gear. I have picked up some here and there, but that does not include a helmet. Also, the game builds up how Fane has to wear a mask, so that people won't see that he's undead. Sooooo ..... I do have to wonder if even a helmet/cap or other gear will prevent characters in the game from recognizing him as undead and reacting. And again, I have no helmet or cap as yet to verify this point. And it's tough getting Fane close enough to other characters to progress to the point where he's fully geared.
He should start with a hood. He’s the only character that does. Doesn’t matter if you wear a baseball cap that completely exposes your face, as long as an item is in that slot, you’re hidden.

If you pick him for your main, he loses his hood/mask while he's on the boat, at the beginning of the game. And it's part of Fane's quest to get back that mask back.
Yes, he should lose the mask, but the hood he’s wearing should remain to my knowledge. The mask is the shapeshifter one and you don’t get the chance to get that back until after you escape the fort. However, if they took the hood away too, it’d be basically impossible to get through the fort, so you should still have that.

I stand corrected. For whatever reason, the hood was not on him, but in was in his inventory. And once I donned the hood, guarsd stopped attacking Fane on sight. Thanks for all the replies.
