I suppose Fallen Heroes would have been a DOS2 expansion/spinoff, but it sounds like we wouldn't have been especially happy with that game if it had ever seen full release.
So instead they gave us the gift bag features and the GM mode which is functional enough. Can't really blame them, post-launch patches were mostly good and the game itself while horribly balanced is a fun experience overall with a lot of good story, characters and quests. Certainly much better than a lot of the other party based RPGs that have come out in the past decade.
A direct sequel where piercing the Veil and taking the battle to the doorstep of the God King, using such a feat as an excuse to de-power the protagonists down to a lower level and introduce a new level climb, could very well work. But I'd rather play BG3, to be honest.
