Lockpicking ?
Complete noob.
How do you get the ability to pick chests and doors ?
I assumed thievery would be at character creation but nope.
Tried googling for the last hour or so but all I can find is how to use it, nothing about how to get it.

At character creation there is nothing to do with thievery available, so how, or where, do you get the thievery skill/ability in order to add points to it ?
Thievery is available at character creation. On the skills tab, if you scroll down, there is a section labeled Civil Skills. This includes thievery, as well as bartering, persuasion, lucky charm, telekinesis, sneaking, and lore master. At level 1/creation, you get 1 point to put here. You get another at 2, then every 4th level after that (6/10/14/18) and one more if you get the talent All Skilled Up. If you recruit a shadowblade character to the party, they start with thievery as their default civil skill.

Thievery skill governs the complexity of locks you can pick. Most characters need lockpicks per lock picked, Undead do not. Not sure what lead you to believe that thievery doesn't allow lockpicking.

If you're asking HOW to actually use the ability, you need to right-click on the object and select pick lock.

You can customize your character during generation.
Selecting your starting class only sets your starting weapons, the rest can be customized.

When creating a character on the top click "Preset" then
->Edit abilities
-> Civil Abilities (Nasty Deeds) Thievery
