(SPOILERS) What determines wether Gareths parents will be dead or alive when you get to Paradise Downs?
They were dead in my first playthrough and they are alive now, i feel I am underleved for the fights there but i fear leaving and coming back will make it so theyre dead when im back.

Sidenote: gareth is dead in this savefile if that matters at all

I just went through this, because my 10+ previous playthroughs I had never seen them alive. Apparently what triggers their death, Jonathan relocating and Gareth burying his parents is crossing the bridge around paradise downs. There is a kind of messed up and burning building kind of near the scarecrows (or at least that general area) where you would find Gareth and Jonathan, and I'm not sure if what you say here impacts his parents or not, but if you go near their house or I think the black pits before you do this then they will be dead.

I'm not sure if this encounter is possible if Gareth is already dead, though.

Thanks, the wiki is very incomplete with this kind of stuff it seems so this helps a lot

Yeah it took me doing some research to determine that trigger. My current playthrough I actually went through the motions to check it out. One thing I forgot to mention was I avoided even crossing that bridge where the kid is across from the voidwoken, just in case even going that far triggers it. It's definitely a nice little alteration from the other way this quest can go.

Yeah you generally want to make a beeline for that little house where you find Jonathan knocked out and Gareth standing over him.there is some sort of time limit because if you take too long both of them are not there and you instead find Gareth burying his parents at their home. I don't know what that time limit is, I just make sure to do it first. Skip the chickens, bridgekeeper fight, going into town, Siva, etc.

From there the path can still divulge. If the dialogue happens where Gareth or you does not kill Jonathan right there, the parents still die. You find Jonathan's gloves at the burning home where the parents are, so it is suggested that Jonathan is the one that kills them.

If you or Gareth kill Jonathan where you first see him in that little shack, then the parents live. It's weird because there's persuasion checks involved, but failing them can still have the parents live anyway because the MC has the non persuasion option of just killing Jonathan anyway. Either through sneaky combat or a dialogue option.

Side note the parents will ultimately lead you to where Hannag is, fun little bit of backstory to be had with them.

Is the time limit thing confirmed? I went to siva, did the chicken thing (even though peeper died before i could officially kill him) did the bridgekeeper fight, and found the artifact Tarquin asks you to get, and failed to save the mind controlled girl and they were still alive

I'm 99% sure it's not time related, but simply a matter of where you go and when.
