Did you kill Mordus or get him to teach you source?
There are 4 quests interwoven in that sequence with Beast's quest vs the Queen taking precedence. Ideally you would get all the quests at once, investigate Mordus house, find evidence and report to the magisters 2 of the 3 pieces of evidence where they will ask you to kill Lohar, you can then tell Lohar you dealt with Mordus without mentioning the Queen then report the magisters request to kill him which Lohar asks you to ignore, then you can kill Lohar if Beast is not in your party (Beast gets a huge attitude drop if you kill Lohar while he is in your party).
If you leave Lohar alive you are forced to fight some of the magisters which you can report to Lohar along with asking about the evidence you find in the mines implicating the Dwarf Queen.
There are a ton of ways you can miss out on XP not doing everything in the right order but for how complicated it is to max XP on this quest it's not worth it in my opinion as simply fighting the magisters or solving the Source Master's quests are generally easier and offer far more XP.
