Which isn't to say that DOS2 isn't a good RPG (it is) but personally I wouldn't suggest it over BG3
Still, there are many mechanics that BG3 has that this one needed. They’re both good games though. The modding community for BG3 is probably going to be much bigger and have greater ambition than this game did. That typically helps extend replayability as well.
AND if it is the first game in this genre going for the cheaper one is infinitely better than an expensive one, if you end up not liking OS2 youd most definitely would not like BG3 as well...
If you don't care about hype or being part of something fresh or being able to understand the memes and references, then 100% play DOS2 first and enjoy BG3 later once it gets a bit more polish and post-launch support.
The homebrew system here (namely the use of cooldowns vs per-rest resources as in 5e/BG3) arguably makes DOS2 a better experience for co-op too because you don't need to interrupt your play session every five minutes to take a long rest. Ditto to the lack of elaborate cutscenes, but that's a matter of personal taste.
Basically, If you want a fantasy XCOM, go for DOS2, otherwise BG3 is a much more well rounded experience.
BG3 is more story oriented and DOS2 is more battle strategic oriented. People say you can build your character in BG3 but they're lying, you can't, you equip gear that's all. Get a head start, go on the wiki, check the armor, see what flavor you like, pick the armor, and play the matching character. (radiant set/light cleric - reverberation set/storm sorc - lightning set/tempest cleric for example) Most of the time the stats are the same with the exception of the key stat. If you have half a functioning brain you can't lose in BG3. There's no need for multiclassing, pure vanilla classes work fine. DOS2 you have to make a build out of stats, gear, and skills in order to have a combat functional character. Also, combat is a little harder at first at least, until you know how to abuse shield and surface mechanics. BG3 is for beginners, then DOS2 would be the next step up. But, you'll see in both games have similar flavor since they're from Larian.
I think both games fall off a cliff in their final acts, although BG3 there are at least a couple of things I like to do in Baldur's Gate before rushing to just get the run over and done with. Arx is just a massive disappointment.
Even if I thought both games were even. What DOS2 has that BG3 doesn't have, is quality overhaul mods that really make the combat great and increase the difficulty (I prefer Epic Encounters, but Conflux is also great). Obviously not recommended for a first playthrough, but after you do a run, and maybe stick around for honour mode, you'll be sick of the combat and these ones really make the game interesting again.
