That the Captain’s set bonus? What it is, is a charm version of the flaming tongues spell. Basically, it gives you an attack of opportunity effect that charms enemies. Thing is, their magic armor still needs to be depleted for it to land and it only triggers once per turn, on the first enemy in range. So an enemy with armor can trigger it then one without armor can approach safely.

I never found it to be too good.

If you really play around it, it can be a useful ability. You just have to test it a bit to understand how it works. Once you do and get a rhythm for it... you'll probably be a level where you'll be replacing it. Just how the game works.

The AoE charm that spell has, is finnicky.
For one, you cannot walk up to enemies and charm them; it's retaliatory. Much like an Attack of Opportunity, it doesn't trigger when you walk past enemies, they need to walk past you.

Some enemies in the game have 0 magic armour, which makes it useful in those scenarios. If enemies move at all in the zone, they will be charmed. If they use abilities like Phoenix Dive or Tactical Retreat to get away from you, whilst already in the zone, it will not charm them. Wings for some reason, does proc the charm if they use it to run from you.

It's extremely useful, but the set itself is meh for stats and defenses. I'm not sure what the charm proc does when you get teleported into enemies by an enemy, nor an ally. Never really messed with it to that extent. Charming some opponents is insane. Enemies with high magic armour will crap on it tho, even if you break the armour, it's likely been a turn or 2 already, so their useful abilities will be on CD.

Just a tiny scenario for you. 3v1. You deal some damage, then they walk up to you. You charm 1, maybe 2, and suddenly, they're walking back to their ally to beat him up. Now you have all 3 enemies close to each other, and you can AoE all of them, cuz they're not really your allies. Really fun to do. It's not something you can rely on, but when it works, you'll love it.

edit: if you have high Leadership, it's not good. Charmed enemies benefit from your leadership. It just makes them harder to kill, and enemies typically don't like to focus charmed enemies. The ones you charm like buffing you more than themselves tho, with Peace of Mind, Encouraged, etc. Charming a summoner also charms their summons by default, since they're Soul Bound, doesn't work vice-versa tho.
