Elves have Flesh Sacrifice, which has 3 upsides and 1 downside:
It reduces your Constitution when used, which nobody cares about thanks to the armor system
+1 Action Point (AP) = more spells/movement
+15% damage and every mage wants damage (well everyone wants damage)
Creates a blood pool where you stand.
This is great if you want to play a witch/necromancer. Combined with the Elemental Affinity talent it's an "All necromancy spells cost 1 less AP, you gain 1 AP and +15% damage for all spells" button.
Edit: That said, you can also be a strong wizzard, rogue, warrior (as long as you don't use a shield) or, of course, an overpowered ranger. Basically every build benefits from extra damage and extra AP
Lizards have a fire breath attack which is a slight plus for Fire mages. They also have Persuasion, which can help as a main character.
Undead have the ability to lockpick for free. Not much use for the mentioned builds aside from Play Dead which allows them to temporarily take themselves out of the fight.
Elves are typically the best. Their Flesh Sacrifice is useful to everyone, though necromancers (and a particular archer build) really use it better for the blood it makes.
Humans have the boosted crit, which is decent for everyone. Encourage sort of falls off, its good early on though.
Dwarves have nothing too special aside from a melee range CC spell. Its good, especially for mages that get in close.
Necromancers are full INT builds that deal physical damage. This is your witch.
Wizards are by default Pyro/Geo mages.
Battlemages... are complicated. Search the forum here with "Battlemage" and you should find a thread or two where I (and others) discuss the build and how it works. There's two types. Physical or magic based battlemages. You don't build for both. So you either go full melee with physical weapons and strength and buff them with magic or you go full magic and use INT and a staff as a melee weapon. It is definitely NOT advised to mix the two like the preset build suggests. Never make a build that splits their damage scaling attributes. Focus one and one only.
Anyway, point is, race doesn't matter too much. The best effects race gives you are still minor in any situation. Elves are the best overall, but ultimately in the end game, race won't make or break your build. Ever.
