Which companions have the best chemistry? Romantic and as a party interaction wise
Baldur's gate 3 getting fully released has made me want to actually finish divinity original sin 2. And with some difficulty I am thinking of playing through the game as Lohse and Fane as my main (almost chose Sebille and Ifan but I kind of want to romance them instead lol) since I am running Tavs and Dark urges in bg3. Now I am just trying to pick out party members. I notice the game itself seems to show Lohse having a romantic interest in Sebille, and I know Red Prince and Sebille have issues with each other, and that Ifan and Sebille relate to each other well. Who typically goes best together interaction wise as party members and romantically? Can any romance combo work? Who would you have all together?

Pretty much everyone works together. Ifan and Fane are linked to the main story, so I personally feel like they fail the purpose of a companion. Companions should have unique stories that distract you from the main story, kinda like a side plot in a TV show. Their stories just don't do that, so in my opinion they're good for main characters only. Doesn't mean you can't use them as companions if you like, I just personally don't like it.

From my experience, Red's romance is the most interesting. Some really fun lines in there. But that's just me. Play who appeals to you the most. Don't worry about who is ideal and all that.

I don't agree with the premise of the previous commenter. I don't see why side characters shouldn't be involved in the main story. Seems like an arbitrary judgement and one that would exclude some of my favorite companions in cRPGs. Additionally, I much prefer playing custom characters. Playing the Origin characters I find just makes them hollow ghosts of themselves. It's nice for replays occasionally because of the "inside look" into their side quests, but there's nothing that compares to playing a character that feels like yours. The additional content you get playing an Origin isn't really worth that to me. I know it gets recommended often but I honestly would not do so on a first playthrough. Larian added it for replay value.

As for who works well together, they did a great job of allowing all the companions to find ways to connect. They are all very mixed morally and so you don't often have to worry much about "good" and "evil" companions. Sebille and the Red Prince actually have some interesting interactions (that I won't spoil) despite their quests lightly conflicting which just shows the care they put into making all the parties mix well in any combination.

Which is a fair assessment. Like I said, Its my personal opinion. There's a reason that TV shows and movies run multiple plots alongside one another, to keep things varied and interesting. Due to the number of them you typically have, companions make perfect targets for side plots. By linking the companion stories to the main plot, you lose that opportunity to create interesting side plots that stick with you all game. Typically, you're going to care for your companions a lot too, makes it far more likely to land as a side story you'll have interest in.

Fane and Ifan are so strongly tied to the main quest, I personally consider them to be poor companions for that reason. Its probably also partially biased because I find Ifan incredibly boring as a character and simply don't like Fane. I feel like most of the love for Fane is due to his connection to the story, not because he's actually a good character. Fane has literally all of like 3 objectives to his story all game long. They're pretty big, but there's just the few. From the start its just "get to act two" and once you do the thing in act two its literally "beat the game", that's it. Beast is the same, but he's still separated from the main story and brings something new to the table. Everything you learn from Fane you can learn without if you pay close attention.

I'd break down Ifan's objectives like Fane's, but I never finished the game with him on over 1000 hours. I already don't have much interest in him for being a basic human character in a game that offers options, basically anytime other races are available, I'll never make a human. Can play a human in any game. So for me, the human has to be quite interesting to be worth my attention. Lohse succeeded there, Ifan failed. So yeah, there's definitely bais there. If you agree with why I'm biased, then he's probably not a good pick. If you have no problems with playing as/with humans or find him interesting, then play him.
