Getting back the red ball?

I'm currently stuck with the quest to save the dog emmie but it seems like i need the red ball from the magister.

the problem is, i gave the ball to buddy......

is there a way to get back the ball?

thats all that emmie says if i talk to her

There isn’t really a quest here to speak about. The only thing that happens is you simply don’t kill the dogs, which includes emmie, but there’s nothing after that. No reward or anything. Not really something to worry about.

You don't need the ball. You don't save Emmie. You just avoid an immediate fight and get some exp if you remind her about buddy and pass the persuasion check.
